When did Chevrolet start making lesser quality vehicles for better profits?

Profits? When was the last year GM made a profit?

Maybe 1992?When did Chevrolet start making lesser quality vehicles for better profits?
Edit:

When did General Motors start making lesser quality vehicles for better profits?

Hard to put an exact date on it as the quality has been going downhill for quite some time now.

Sadly, even tho GM has emerged from bankruptcy, they still have a lot of ';junk'; sitting on the dealers car lots.

Any improvement in quality will not be seen on the car lots for maybe 6 months, and then for that better quality to actually be recognized by the consumers will take a year or more. When did Chevrolet start making lesser quality vehicles for better profits?
Well, I just bought myself an 09 Cobalt SS, and found that is is by far the most underrated performance vehicle under 25k. The car feels very well put together - more so than the autocross Miata I put together. And, you can easily bolt on a few bits to get the TC/SS over three hundred horsepower. And this with bolstered seats that are worthy of being sold on the aftermarket, and a built-in subwoofer in the trunk.

In short - while nobody was looking, GM/Chevy actually started bolting together some very competitive, quality vehicles. 2010 Camaro anyone? Have you sat in or drove the new Malibu? Don't go generalizing - there's some real gems in the rough, and some thoughtful engineering that's getting overlooked.

In truth, the American auto industry in general started producing second-rate vehicles in the mid-seventies, and gradually lost its edge. On top of it, most domestic auto manufacturers started abandoning the base-performance vehicles in the eighties to early nineties, in deference to higher-profit margin SUV's and light trucks. GM went merrily along for the ride. The only reason Ford didn't need a bailout was it didn't saddle itself with the obscene amount of debt that GM/Chrysler did.
about the same time that all the rest of the automaker,s did....yeah...they all did it....except for the german/ european make,s...they just raised the price,s....even the Japanese did it until the japanese government passed legislation prohibiting that practice...first was chrysler [ nearly went under in the 70,s until the government bailed them out because they needed jeep,s %26amp; drive train for tank,s]..then ford %26amp; G.M. with their pinto,s %26amp; vega,s...even their top model,s in the late 70,s -early 80,s...they slowly started to smarten up due to european/asian competition..nearly went out completely due to gross mismanagement ...I think they finally learned their lesson as of late....their product,s are now as good as all the rest...just check J.D. Power,s for the best rated new automobile....I don,t think they will be cutting their nose off to spite their face any longer...upper management has finally learned they have to provide a quality product to compete....maybe they all need to remove those blood sucking C.E.O.,s %26amp; find someone that care,s about the company they represent.
lol alooooonnnnggg time ago when everything started to go to plastic and then even before that when the emissions package went into effect. when they first did the emissions package there was so much junk underneath the hood that half the emissions junk didn't even work that good. obviously look at our ozone layer. it gotten how big. there has to be a better way to propel a car than gas or hybrid cars. That is why i want hydrogen and e85 pushed along faster than it is. hydrogen cars only produce pure water as an emission which in turn helps us all out. It also has more horsepower and ft lbs of torque than gas, alcohol, and diesel could ever make. but the only downfall to hydrogen is that it is volitle and explosive.
After the government started cracking down on big-block V8 engines (about early to mid-70's). Some of the worst automobiles to ever roll off an assembly line can be traced back to the disco era, and quality has gone downhill ever since. The Japanese should not be blamed for capitalizing on American automaker mistakes though.
They tried that in the 80s didn't work out. Now they have one of the better products with the best warranty in the car business. They don't build vehicles of lesser quality and give longer warranties. That would ruin the company
It was the, ';X'; cars in the 80's (Pontiac Phoenix, Chevrolet Citation, etc.). GM rushed it to market to compete against the imports and didn't do enough testing to work the bugs out of it. It gave GM a bad name after that.
Just about all of the eighties cars were lame, yes even the imports. The emission controls were being hustled in etc.
i loved chevy until 1971/72 after that junk...worst was 1976 to 1990...think chevy citation...think vega...think chevette....boo hoo
they always have still do and always will
